During the 1960s, many of the aircrafts from World War II and the 1950s were quickly being disposed of in smelters along with their historical footprint in aviation history. Some aircraft were put on display near a fence for passersby to see. The display soon became a tourist destination and eventually evolved into the museum it is today.

After the site came off alert in Nov of 1982, the work to transform the site into a museum began. In 1994, the museum was officially designated a National Historic Landmark.
